Denver to Phoenix: A Complete Moving Guide

Cost, timing, what to ship vs. drive, and how to navigate a 600-mile Southwest relocation without the stress.

Denver to Phoenix is one of the most common relocation routes in the Southwest. It's roughly 600 miles, about 9 hours of driving, and it crosses through some genuinely beautiful terrain — the New Mexico desert, the Navajo Nation, and the Verde Valley.

It's also a move BBM has done many times. Here's what you actually need to know.

How Much Does a Denver-to-Phoenix Move Cost?

For a 1–2 bedroom move with a professional crew and truck, expect a total cost in the $1,800–$3,200 range depending on home size, number of specialty items, and timing. For a 3–4 bedroom home, budget $3,500–$5,500+.

These numbers assume a professional, reputable moving company with an accurate hourly estimate. DIY truck rental (Budget, Penske, U-Haul) runs $300–$700 for the vehicle alone, but you're doing all the loading and unloading yourself and dealing with truck return logistics at destination.

When to Move

Best timing: October through March. Mild weather in Phoenix, and you avoid the worst of Colorado's snow season (though mountain passes can be snowy through April). This is the ideal window for a Denver-to-Phoenix run.

Summer (June–August): You'll arrive in Phoenix during peak heat season. If possible, schedule your move to arrive in late afternoon to avoid having crew unloading in 105°F+ midday heat. Not impossible — but harder on everyone.

Spring break season (March–April): Heavier traffic on I-40/I-17 corridor, especially in the Sedona area. Add buffer time.

What Route Do Movers Take?

Most Denver-to-Phoenix moves take I-25 south to Albuquerque, then I-40 west to Flagstaff (or US-89 south through Sedona), then I-17 south into Phoenix. Total drive time: 9–11 hours depending on stops and traffic. Professional crews typically do this as a single-day run.

What to Ship vs. Drive Yourself

Ship with the movers: Furniture, appliances, boxes, art, everything you'd pack normally. This is what they're there for.

Keep in your car: Valuables (jewelry, important documents, laptops), items with sentimental irreplaceability, medications, anything you'll need immediately on arrival night.

Plants: Arizona has agricultural inspection stations at its border. Most houseplants are fine, but certain citrus and agricultural plants are restricted. Check AZDA guidelines if you have a significant plant collection.

Arizona Registration & Driver's License

Once you establish Arizona residency, you have 10 days to obtain an Arizona driver's license and 15 days to register your vehicle. Budget for emissions testing (required in Maricopa County) and title transfer fees.
