The Moving Day Checklist Every Renter and Homeowner Needs
From 8 weeks out to the night before — a week-by-week timeline that covers everything most people forget.
Most moving stress comes from disorganization — not from the actual physical work. A checklist doesn't eliminate the chaos, but it dramatically reduces the number of things you forget until it's too late to fix them.
Here's the timeline we recommend to clients, based on hundreds of moves in Denver and Phoenix.
8 Weeks Out
- Confirm your move-out date and start communicating it to utility companies
- Declutter aggressively — sell, donate, or discard anything you wouldn't want to pay to move
- Start researching and collecting moving company quotes
- If moving long-distance, start researching your destination city (neighborhoods, schools, utilities)
6 Weeks Out
- Book your moving company (summer dates fill fast — don't wait)
- Request moving assistance from your employer if applicable
- Begin collecting packing materials (boxes, tape, markers, packing paper)
- Start packing non-essential rooms and seasonal items
4 Weeks Out
- Notify USPS of your address change (usps.com/move)
- Update address with: bank, employer, insurance, subscriptions, doctor's office, DMV
- Transfer or close gym memberships, local services
- Continue packing — everything that isn't daily-use
- Confirm parking situation with your movers (permits, truck access, elevator reservations)
2 Weeks Out
- Pack all but essential daily items
- Label every box with contents AND destination room
- Confirm your moving reservation and provide any updated inventory or special item info
- Arrange care for pets and children on move day
- Defrost freezer if it's moving with you
Moving Week
- Pack an "essentials box" — things you'll need the first night: toiletries, phone charger, change of clothes, basic kitchen items, medications
- Disassemble large furniture (or confirm your movers will handle it)
- Back up important documents digitally
- Confirm move-day logistics with your crew (arrival time, parking)
The Night Before
- Finish packing everything except essentials box and overnight bag
- Charge all devices
- Confirm parking / elevator reservation if needed
- Get a full night's sleep — you'll need it
Move Day
- Be present when movers arrive — walk them through the home and flag any fragile or priority items
- Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and storage area before the truck leaves
- Check behind appliances, under beds, in medicine cabinets
- Take photos of the empty space for your move-out inspection
- Confirm the destination address with your crew before they depart
Day After
- Confirm utilities are active at new place
- Set up internet (often takes a few days if you haven't pre-arranged)
- Find your essentials box first and set up a functional sleeping space
- Don't try to unpack everything — it takes time and that's okay
